SPHINGOPHILY

Sphingophlily means pollination by hawkmoths. Spingophile flowers have coevolved with their pollinators, so their morphology, colour, nectar, scent and even the time the flowers open have adapted to fit the insects needs. For example flowers are pale and petals are fused to a certain extend to form a long tube containing the nectar. Even the flowers headspace scents are adapted to the insect’s taste

In turn hawkmoths have adapted to the flowers too, some of them are only active at dusk, night or dawn, they have a good sense of smell, can hover while feeding and have long mouthparts to reach the nectar on the bottom of the long floral tubes.

Example: Lonicera japonica and Theretra Japonica
